The bestest, tastiest Mexican food I've EVER eaten - and I've eaten a lot!
I had the pescado guerror - mahi mahi that was char-grilled and covered in a light, white wine [ ...More ] sauce swimming w/ bay scallops, FRESH mushrooms (I'm sick of restaurants using canned mushrooms), red peppers and shrimp. Man o man was it GREAT! The mahi was so fresh and tender - like a finely cooked steak off the grill. It came w/ the papas con chili - red smashed potatoes w/ garlic and jalapenos mixed in - yummers!
My hubby had a combination dish - it was actually a platter. We have big appetities but took most of both of our dishes home... you really get a LOT for the money. Hubby's dish had a guacamole enchilada, a fresh, sauteed spinach enchilada, chicken, a chile relleno and more. Truly, the portions were ginormous and we had enough to eat dinner that night at home too. The prices were a little high ($40 for an early dinner - 2 entrees, an appetizer and two iced teas) for lunch - but it's one of those things were the quality was there so we didn't mind the high price tag.
The fundido del mar was good - cheese dip with fresh seafood. The salsa was fresh, the chips were light and crispy. And with the salsa, they give you a "shot" of their homemade hot sauce... hubby said it was good (I'm more of a Tabasco girl myself).
The service was great too... we were actually going to see a movie and didn't want to let the leftovers rot in the hot car, so the server let us bag it up and keep it in their kitchen's fridge until the movie was over. I liked that personal touch.
This Mexican restaurant had more creative, fusion-style [ ...Less ]
Aye chihuahua !! Es muy bueno !!
LOVE IT! It's just outside Cypress Gardens and it was an unexpected treat. We popped in just to [ ...More ] grab something quick thinking it was like every other mom n' pop Mexican joint, and boy was I wrong!
All the dishes are fresh and cooked to order. I had the flautas. Sometimes, at other places, they can be over-fried and greasy, but not here. They were light and crispy and flavorful! It came with a fresh pico de gallo (tomato relish) with lots of cilantro, sour cream and TONS of fresh guacamole. Again, at most places you get a teasponn of guac, but not here... it was nearly 1/2 cup!
What's REALLY cool is the hot sauce bar. Admittedly, the hottest pepper sauce I can stand is Tabasco. I prefer the sauces with more flavors (mango, garlic, etc.) and not just the heat. Hubby - he's a HOT guy. He's ordered "nuclear" wings and sauces at other places and they were tepid. Tijuana Flats sauce bar has small, paper cups so you can try one - or all of them. The milder ones were great - and the hotter ones, according to hubby, were awesome too.
Winter Haven is a bit of a drive for us - especially w/ gas prices like they are - but well worth the trip. The atmosphere is fun and casual w/ outdoor dining by a fountain available. The manager told me of their plans to open two in Lakeland in the coming months so be sure to check them up.
I give them two snaps up in a zee-formation. [ ...Less ]
Pre-packaged, frozen food cooked like an 8th grade cooking class
If I could give it zero stars I would. I've given Applebees 5 chances over the last few years, [ ...More ] all over the country, and EVERY time the food tasted freezer burnt, bland and uninteresting. The salads are okay - it's hard to mess that up. I've had the appetizer veggie pizza (slimy, no taste), several chicken dishes (all were rubbery)... I've given them all the money I plan to. I've also given them chance after chance - never again. If you're a foodie - or have a sophisticated palate - this is NOT the place for you.
If you drink, they have a daily happy hour... but the drinks are watered-down and have WAY too much ice.
If you read any of my other reviews I mention that I much prefer a local, mom-n-pop place. I do, in fact, enjoy several chain restaurants as well. This isn't one of them. They fit into the Bennigans/TGI Fridays/Ruby Tuesday group... a varied, but bland, menu.
If you're on the road and just have to stop and eat - and your choice is McDonalds or Applebees - choose McDonalds. [ ...Less ]

So last week I went on vacation to my husband's hometown of Memphis, TN. Great trip, lots of sites to see, family, meals out, etc. On a whim, we decide to pull into the National Civil Rights Museum. It is the Lorraine Motel on Mulberry St. where MLK was asasinated - it's been turned into the muse...
